Yemeni Army Kills Over 40 Saudi-Backed Fighters Near Bab el-Mandeb

A Yemeni army offensive near the Bab el-Mandeb region in the country’s southwest resulted in the death of 40 Saudi-backed fighters, including their commander, local media reported Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The military source also noted that Saudi forces were « surprised » by the operations carried out by the Yemeni army on Saturday, and sustained heavy military equipment losses, the news agency reported.

« Over 40 Saudi-backed mercenaries, including their senior commander Heisam Qassem Taher, were killed in the Yemeni army offensive in the Southwestern part of Ta’iz province near Bab al-Mandab, » a military source told the al-Masira TV channel, as quoted by Fars News Agency.

Yemen has been engulfed in a military conflict between the government headed by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and Shiite Houthi rebels, who have been supported by army units loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Since March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions at the request of Hadi.

British #FakeNews – False Reports of Russian Ambassador Assassinated in Yemen

January 14th, 2016 – Fort Russ News – by Joaquin Flores

Reports began circulating hours ago in British media, such as the UK Express and Sun, that armed gunman had stormed the Russian embassy in Yemen, killing the Russian ambassador.

Barq news agency from the KSA had claimed that ambassador Vladimir Dedushkin, ambassador to Yemen since 2013, was shot in Sanaa, Yemen. This story was then carried by several British media outlets.

The reports went viral on social networking platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, a popular method that mainstream media outlets use for the dissemination of their standard ‘fake’ news stories. Over the last several decades these types of stories have led the building of popular support for wars based on faulty premises. These wars have led to the deaths of millions of innocent civilians.

Fort Russ News contacted the Russian embassy in Belgrade at 3pm CET for confirmation of the story. Fort Russ was told that no one at the embassy in Sanaa had been killed, let alone shot. Furthermore, there had not been any attack, according to them. We were unable to get further confirmation or denial from Yemeni authorities at the time of publication.

But this raises the question of how the false story was leaked and spread in British media earlier today, drawing a connection to the ‘fake news’ hype circulating in the west.

One likely scenario based on prior experience, is that media handlers, close to Saudi media outlet Barq, working with the would-be attackers, leaked a success story before they had actually succeeded.

This attempt comes on the heels of similar incidents in recent weeks.

Recall that last month a Turkish policeman murdered a Russian ambassador as he gave a speech in Turkey’s capital, Ankara; last week a second top Russian diplomat was found dead at his home in Athens for reasons still under investigation.

We also recall that Russian FM spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a public statement recently that in closed door meetings, the US delegations had threatened Russia with retaliation and ‘pain’ for its campaign to liberate Syria from the foreign invasion.

Anti-Syria group asks Israel to confront Assad: Report

An anti-Syria group comprising certain foreign-based oppositionists openly pleads with the Israeli regime to directly confront the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The so-called National Salvation Front in Syria, which represents certain members of the anti-Damascus  opposition in diaspora, including some who are based in France and Belgium, also proposed a “roadmap” for closer relations with Tel Aviv, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Monday.

Citing an Israeli radio station, SANA said the roadmap features the recognition of Israel by a post-Assad Syrian regime, arriving at a compromise over the issue of Syria’s Golan Heights, which have been occupied by Tel Aviv since 1967, and the setting up of friendly ties and strategic cooperation between the two sides.

The plan also obligates the dissolution of all Syria-based anti-Israeli Palestinian resistance groups.

The group’s spokesman Fahd al-Masri, meanwhile, released audio and video messages, demanding that Tel Aviv expand its support for anti-Damascus militants.

The Israeli regime has been a vociferous supporter of the Assad administration’s ouster. It has been arming the Takfiri militants fighting the government forces and providing treatment for those arriving in Golan Heights under the pretext that it would render such service to those in “its” territory.

Last year, Riad Hijab, the head of a Saudi-backed so-called opposition group, known as the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), met with former Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Moshe Ya’alon on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

In the past, Kamal al-Labwani, a well-known anti-Assad activist with close ties with US and Israeli officials, hailed Tel Aviv for its support for the militants, and urged the regime to establish a safe zone for them on the border with the Golan Heights.

‘The internet will shut down for 24 hours in 2017 causing financial markets to crash’

Millions of computer users across the world could be blocked from the internet this year as the global network will shut down for 24 hours, US technology security vendor LogRhythm predicted in December.

The company’s chief information security officer and vice president James Carder told Business Insider, it won’t just be a technical issue stopping people from uploading their selfies on Instagram.

« In 2017, we’re going to see it hit big sometime, somewhere. If the internet goes down, financial markets will tank, »he said.

According to Carder, there were all the signs in 2016, with criminals »testing missiles by shooting them into the ocean. »

« We saw the massive DDoS [distributed denial of service] attack against DynDNS just a couple of months ago. That DDoS attack took down sites like Twitter and Spotify for a few hours. We saw a similar DDoS hit Brian Krebs before the attack against Dyn. These were really just tests, » he said.

In October a mass cyber-attack crippled some of the world’s biggest websites with users unable to access Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify and many others for over two hours.

« If you can prove that you can take down massive sites and a large chunk of the US internet for a few hours, a 24-hour outage seems pretty easy to do? »said Carder.

The head of LogRhythm also said the issue of « fake news » will only get worse this year, with hackers targeting major media sites.

« The power of influence is starting to shift away from mainstream news outlets, and I don’t think that is something those mainstream outlets can afford to let happen. They will respond to the fake news threat by trying to implement some level of media control that will likely take it a little too far, » he said.

« I think hackers, in the name of protecting our freedom of speech, will retaliate by knocking down a major media outlet or two. »

LogRhythm’s Australia and New Zealand director of sales Simon Howe has predicted that ransomware on mobile devices will become far more prevalent in 2017.

According to him, attackers will target unsuspecting smartphone users and hold their personal data hostage to extort money.

“For example, attackers will threaten to send out or delete a user’s photos unless a ransom is paid. Just think — how much you would pay to recover your photos? » said Howe.

He added that attackers will use pre-authenticated tokens to disseminate malware.

“Because so many Apple devices are interconnected, the malware could very quickly spread, » he said.

Syria: Russian sappers and Uran-6 robot detonate IEDs in Aleppo (VIDEO)

Russian sappers continued to clear residential areas of eastern Aleppo of explosive devices on Wednesday, after a big land mine was found in an old truck in Bustan al-Qasr.

The area was evacuated after a group of sappers from the International Mine Action Centre found a tube filled with 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of TNT that was controlled by radio signal.

The Head of the International Mine Action Centre of the Russian Armed Forces, Igor Mikhailik, stated, that, « with the help of special equipment the radio signal was muffled and sappers neutralised this explosive device ».

He noted that, « the vehicle was prepared as a ‘jihad-mobile,’ placed in a densely populated area and was designed to be blown up during the afternoon, when there is a large number of both cars and local residents. »

Russian sappers continued the mine clearance operation in residential areas, while the robotic Uran-6 complex inspected the city’s outskirts where it detonated explosives.

The squad of the International Mine Action Centre of the Russian Armed Forces arrived at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia on December 3. The group reportedly includes specialists that previously took part in mine clearance operations in the Syrian city of Palmyra.

The War Against Alternative Information

The U.S. establishment is not content simply to have domination over the media narratives on critical foreign policy issues, such as Syria, Ukraine and Russia. It wants total domination. Thus we now have the “Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act” that President Obama signed into law on Dec. 23 as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2017, setting aside $160 million to combat any “propaganda” that challenges Official Washington’s version of reality.

The new law mandates the U.S. Secretary of State to collaborate with the Secretary of Defense, Director of National Intelligence and other federal agencies to create a Global Engagement Center “to lead, synchronize, and coordinate efforts of the Federal Government to recognize, understand, expose, and counter foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts aimed at undermining United States national security interests.” The law directs the Center to be formed in 180 days and to share expertise among agencies and to “coordinate with allied nations.”

The new law is remarkable for a number of reasons, not the least because it merges a new McCarthyism about purported dissemination of Russian “propaganda” on the Internet with a new Orwellianism by creating a kind of Ministry of Truth – or Global Engagement Center – to protect the American people from “foreign propaganda and disinformation.”

As part of the effort to detect and defeat these unwanted narratives, the law authorizes the Center to: “Facilitate the use of a wide range of technologies and techniques by sharing expertise among Federal departments and agencies, seeking expertise from external sources, and implementing best practices.” (This section is an apparent reference to proposals that Google, Facebook and other technology companies find ways to block or brand certain Internet sites as purveyors of “Russian propaganda” or “fake news.”)

Justifying this new bureaucracy, the bill’s sponsors argued that the existing agencies for “strategic communications” and “public diplomacy” were not enough, that the information threat required “a whole-of-government approach leveraging all elements of national power.”

The law also is rife with irony since the U.S. government and related agencies are among the world’s biggest purveyors of propaganda and disinformation – or what you might call evidence-free claims, such as the recent accusations of Russia hacking into Democratic emails to “influence” the U.S. election.

The enactment of HR5181, “Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation,” suggests that the ruling powers seek to escalate suppression of news and analyses that run counter to the official narrative. Backed by a new infusion of $160 million, the plan is to further squelch skeptical voices with operation for “countering” and “refuting” what the U.S. government deems to be propaganda and disinformation.

As part of the $160 million package, funds can be used to hire or reward “civil society groups, media content providers, nongovernmental organizations, federally funded research and development centers, private companies, or academic institutions.”

Among the tasks that these private entities can be hired to perform is to identify and investigate both print and online sources of news that are deemed to be distributing “disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda directed at the United States and its allies and partners.”

In other words, we are about to see an escalation of the information war.

Russian Plans Military Drills with Philippines

The Russian Navy says it is planning to hold maritime drills with the Philippines to help the Southeast Asian country fight terrorism and piracy.

The announcement on Tuesday came as two Russian ships – anti-submarine vessel Admiral Tributs and a sea tanker Boris Butoma – docked in Manila on a four-day goodwill visit.

According to Rear Admiral Eduard Mikhailov, the deputy commander of the Russian Navy’s Pacific fleet, an anti-submarine vessel, named Admiral Tributs and a sea tanker Boris Butoma arrived in the Philippine capital late on Tuesday for a four-day official navy-to-navy contact.

“Our governments will maybe discuss in some period of time the possibilities of our maritime exercises,” deputy commander of the Russian Navy’s Pacific fleet Rear Admiral Eduard Mikhailov said on board Admiral Tributs.

“We’re very sure that in the future we’ll get such exercises” with the Philippine side, perhaps “just the maneuvering or maybe use some combat systems and so on,” he told a news conference.

Mikhailov said that a wide range of equipment had been brought on both vessels to show Russia’s anti-terror capabilities to the Philippine military.

“The biggest problem now in the world is terrorism and piracy… we will show you what we can do and we will see what you can do and show us, » he said.

The joint drills come at a time of strained relations between the Philippines and the US. President Rodrigo Duterte was quoted as saying last month that Manila could live without US aid after Washington said it was halting assistance.

“You can choose … to cooperate with United State of America or to cooperate with Russia, but from our side we can help you in every way that you need,” Mikhailov said on Tuesday.

Philippines suffers from attacks from a number of terror groups on its territory, the most prominent of which is the ultra-violent Abu Sayyaf, which pledged alliance to the Daesh terrorist group in the summer of 2014.

Those groups have been involved in many criminal activities, including rape and drug trafficking, in what they describe as their battle for an independent province in the Philippines.

Israel Opens Database with 400,000 Declassified Censored Documents on Missing Yemenite Children Affair

Since the 1950s, over 1,000 families — mostly immigrants from Yemen, but also dozens from the Balkans, North Africa and other Middle Eastern countries — have alleged their children were systematically kidnapped from Israeli hospitals and put up for adoption, sometimes abroad.

The claims were generally dismissed by authorities.

Over the past several decades, the government has appointed three investigative committees to probe the case, with all concluding the majority of children died in the hospital and were simply buried without the families’ being informed or involved. The last panel to probe the affair in 2001 reached similar conclusions, but sealed various testimonies from the probe in the state archive for 70 years.

Now they are being released.

Even though the allegations have largely been disputed by scholars and seemingly refuted by probes, the case has kept resurfacing, in part because many of the families were not given their children’s bodies nor informed of their burial places, death certificates were riddled with errors, and some of the missing children were sent army draft notices 18 years after their alleged deaths. There have also been cases where adopted children were able to confirm, through paternity tests, they were from Yemenite families who were told they had died.

But family members say there has been so much misinformation over the years and current confusion, it is doubtful families will get the closure they crave.

Yigal Yossef, a former mayor of the town of Rosh Ha’ayin and a representative of the families, told Army Radio Wednesday that he continues to search for his sister who disappeared as a baby even though his family was given a death certificate. “Two weeks ago I went to the Interior Ministry to check and it turned out my sister is still alive,” he said. But when he went to the address listed with the ministry, the home did not exist. “I don’t know whom to believe” anymore, Yossef said.

He wants to also see the government take responsibility. “The government needs to give an answer,” he said. “I expect the government to take responsibility for this crime.”

MK Nurit Koren (Likud), who chairs the Knesset lobby tasked with researching the Yemenite Children Affair and who had a cousin disappear, praised the decision to release the documents in an interview with Army Radio Wednesday morning, but noted that “this is just the beginning of the path.

She also cautioned that despite the release many people would still not find “precise answers.”

She also pointed out that the documents being published are from the years 1948 to 1954, although one of the investigate committees found that the affair continued until 1966. Koren called on the government to release the rest of the documents, as “we are obliged to give these families answers.”

Both Hanegbi and Koren also called for the establishment of a DNA database in order to pair families with their disappeared children.

The documents to be released will only include information on missing children whose families had requested the government investigate the matter. Other families, who were affected but who did not formally ask the government to look into the issue, can ask the State Archives for any relevant information pertaining to them.

While some of the information will be censored, as it contains names, adoption records and other personal details, families who want to see the information in full can request to do so from the State Archives, Army Radio reported.

Duterte Calls 3 Out of 5 Americans ‘Idiots’, Threatens to ‘Burn Down’ UN Building

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said that Americans should just ‘shut up’.

« The problem with these white people, these American blockheads, is that three out of five of them are idiots, and only two are in their right minds, » he said in reaction to US’ threats of cutting aid to the Philippines over the ongoing drug war.

« You Americans should just shut up. If you are destroying my country, I will kill you, » Duterte reportedly said on Thursday (22 December) during an event at his official residence, the Malacañang Palace, ABSCBN News reported.

The president also hurled abuses at UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein, calling him an « idiot » and a « son of a b**** », and threatened to burn down the United Nations building in New York.

His firebrand remarks came after Hussein said earlier in the week that he would call for a probe into Duterte’s admissions of killing criminals during his mayoral term.

« You go and file a complaint in the United Nations. I will burn down the United Nations if you want. I will burn it down if I go to America, » Duterte said, adding that he will « whack in the head » any UN observer who would investigate the extrajudicial killings of drug suspects under his « war against illegal drugs », reported.

According to the Philippines Star, Duterte also explained that he does not endorse extrajudicial killings. He also said that there was no crime in threatening to kill criminals and drug lords.

« We do not kill our own fellowmen. Of course it hurts to see a Filipino die in front of you. Of course it is despicable, » Duterte added.

Meanwhile, Filipino Senator Panfilo Lacson came out in defence of the president, saying Hussein should first study the Philippine constitution and laws before making suggestions.

« Apparently, the UN rights chief is not familiar with, first, our President enjoys immunity from suit during his term.

« Second, no matter how many times a person in our country admits having committed murder, as long as there is no other evidence to corroborate his extrajudicial confession, the case cannot stand in any court of law, » he reportedly said.

Lacson also said the UN official can « shout to high heavens to investigate the President but unfortunately for him, he can’t get past that call ».

Terrible loss: 64 members of world-renowned Alexandrov army band missing in Tu-154 crash (VIDEO)

Most of the passengers on the Tu-154 plane that crashed after take-off from Sochi were members of the world-famous Alexandrov army choir, en route to Syria to perform at the Latakia / Hmeymim airbase for a New Year concert.

All members of the Alexandrov Ensemble choir, except for three lead vocalists, were on board the Tu-154 plane that crashed shortly after take-off in Sochi, Vadim Ananiev, a lead vocalist from the choir, told TASS.

Valery Halilov, the head of the Alexandrov Ensemble, the famous army choir of the Russian armed forces, and 64 of its members were on board of the Russian Tu-154 aircraft that crashed into the Black Sea on Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry press service said Sunday.

The list also includes Anton Gubankov, the chief of the Directorate of Culture of the Russian Defense Ministry, and prominent Russian humanitarian activist Elizaveta Glinka, the head of Spravedlivaya Pomoshch (Fair Aid) charity, according to the ministry.

Nine Russian journalists and two civil servants were also on board of the plane. Russia’s Channel One, NTV and Zvezda broadcaster have confirmed that their journalists were among the passengers of the aircraft.

Fragments of the plane were discovered off the shore of Sochi.

According to the Defense Ministry, the crashed Tu-154 was flown by Roman Volkov, a seasoned First Class pilot with an impressive track record of over 3,000 hours spent in the air.

Yuri Sytnik, a Merited Pilot of Russia and a member of the presidential commission on civil aviation, said that everything was possible, including a mid-air collision with a “foreign object,” but added that even then the pilots would have enough time to inform the airport tower about the mishap.

“The Tu-154 is a highly reliable plane, even though it is not the easiest one to fly. In this case the pilot was a real ace and if even he failed to prevent the disaster, then something extraordinary must have happened,” Sytnik said.

He added that even though the Tu-154 was 33 years old, it had been used very sparingly and was very well maintained too. He didn’t think that there could have been an explosion on board because it would have been noticed from the shore.

Meanwhile, officials ruleed out a possible terrorist attack. Viktor Ozerov, head of the Federation Council’s Defense Committee said the crash could have been caused by a technical malfunction or pilot error, but excluded a terrorist act, arguing that the plane was operated by the military.

« I totally exclude the idea of an attack bringing down the plane,” Ozerov told RIA Novosti.

His opinion was echoed by first deputy head of the State Duma’s Defense Committee Andrei Krasov, who likewise ruled out terrorism as the possible cause of the crash.

“I think that something extraordinary must have happened. I just can’t figure out how anything like this could happen to a plane operated by the Defense Ministry. No, this is impossible,” Krasov told RIA.

Veteran test pilot Yuri Vashchuk downplayed the possibility of a technical mishap on board the crashed airliner.

“It must take some really extraordinary situation to cause the simultaneous shutdown of all the three engines. The failure of even one engine is already critical, but I still don’t think that it could lead to a catastrophe,” he said.

The Alexandrov Ensemble, the official choir of the Russian Armed Forces, has earned a place in the music pantheon thanks to an immensely rich and varied repertoire that includes more than 2,000 numbers – from Soviet and folk songs, to famous rock ballads, including Freddie Mercury’s greatest hits.
